A Dark Day in Springfield

Controversial you say!!! That’s what Banksy is all About.

The British graffiti artist Banksy has created a controversial title sequence for an episode of THE SIMPSONS entitled “MoneyBart”, aired in the US on Sunday, with a scheduled UK showing of 10.21.10.

The sequence begins similarly in the usual sense, with a few subtle edits. Banksy’s trademark is spray-painted over Springfield and Bart’s face is covered with a bandanna while he jots down “I must not write all over the walls” across the blackboard.

Shortly after, Homer gets hit by the car sending him flying over to the couch which normally signifies the start of the episode. However in Banksy’s depiction the sequence is just beginning. The screen pans in to a dark and drab factory, in which rows of people sit drawing the branded cartoon similar to that of a sweat shop.

The audience is then shown scenes of kittens being thrown into a wood-chipper to make stuffing for Bart dolls, all while a unicorn’s horn is used to stab holes in Simpsons DVDs, while being chained to the wall. A dolphin head/ tongue is also used to as packaging tape to seal the boxes before shipping.

Banksy’s sequence was apparently inspired by reports that the show outsources the bulk of its animation to a company in Seoul, South Korea. Twentieth Century Fox has taken great efforts to pull videos off YouTube, submitting copyright claims to have videos taken down.

Al Jean, executive producer for ‘The Simpsons’, said: “This is what you get when you outsource.”

Enjoy
